solstice night-ride suggestions
Hi
I'm seriously considering heading up to that part of the country for three nights or so, over the weekend closest to the summer solstice.
The main draw is to experience the closest we get to the midnight sun (weather permitting) by doing a night-ride somewhere in the area.
I'll be staying in Portmahomack but I lack a knowledge of Easter Ross, especially from the perspective of a cyclist.
I'm wondering if your collective mind may have some suggestions for a four to five hour leisurely introduction to what's on offer up there.
Thank you.
Best regards
Mike

Hi Gord, not sure if you received my first post. I see the new tops come in sleeveless. I would like to order one of these instead of the short sleeve I asked for in my first post. Let me know if this is possible and when you need the money. Cheers Pete

That is no problem at all, i will put you in for a sleeveless. Will be in touch with sizes soon and then we can sort out the money.

just looked through some fotos of SXC3 at Laggan and I see you were there ( FLICKR DOT COM/photos/ta_photo/3546731544/ ). In fact I walked right by you before the race and remember thinking 'that chap looks like Alek' sorry I didn't speak to you. looking forward to the '10 under' (plan A: draught Ewan for 9&1/2 hours then slingshot round shove a stick in Kenny kentleys spokes and steam in for the win!) see you all there, happy riding, Colin Olden

Hi Alison

There are only two races left this year with Learnie on Sat 31st being full already. The last race is in Fort William on Thu 5th June as part of the Mountain bike world cup. I have been informed that all the information is regularly sent to active schools co-ordinators(primary and secondary) and Pe teachers by Highland council, unfortunately a lot of the info doesn't reach the kids who are keen and interested.

I hope this helps you.

Homepage picture
On Sunday 4th May, I went up to Portmahomack with my dad and sister, for the afternoon.
as I was a rear seat passenger, I had time and space to admire the (largely)glorious Scottish landscape between Glasgow and the Tarbat Peninsula.
So, on the stretch of the A9, close to Alness and before the Fearn turnoff, I look up the hilltop horizon on my left and see this series of 'pillars'. I squinted a bit, and looked harder and suddenly realised that I was seeing the folly/ruin that's pictured on the homepage for this site.
I felt like my next visit up there would see me take a day to cycle over to it.
What's it called? What's its history? How do you get there?
Many thanks for info.
regards

Posted by Mike Tough on 06 May 2008
Hi Mike

The Fyrish Monument was built sometime around 1782 on Cnoc Fyrish, near Evanton, on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land to make way for sheep, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness.

The view from the monument over the Cromarty Firth and beyond is stunning, There is a good path to the top, quite steep in places. It starts in the car park northeast of the hill at OS grid 627715(Sheet 21- Dornoch and Alness). Take the Boath turning off the B9176 Struie road, the car park is approx 1mile up on the left.

Next time you are up this way have a look for one of our rides and come along to sample the riding Fyrish has to offer.

All the best
Gordymac.

Thank you very much for your swift reply. Very informative indeed. I look forward to getting some extended visits up there when the house is finished. When that time comes, I will most certainly be getting in the saddle to explore some of the area. The view you mention is one that I can only imagine at the moment. When I see it for real, I expect to be amazed (and breathless from the climb, no doubt).
Thanks again.
Best wishes

Track conditions
Hi all,
Just back from a friday night spin up the hill, then down to Evanton quarry and through Black rock gorge. Riding for me is like altitude training!!!All the trails are soaked and muddy. When are we going to see some good weather???
All for now
