Mike Darren .................................................................................................................................... Caldo
Name: Donnie Age: 19 What does he do: Electrical technician The bike: A Cove Stiffee Fr with Rock Shox Revelations, runs on Shimano XTR and is slowed down by Avid Juicy 7's. Rides: On flat pedals with the grippiest shoes around 5.10 impacts. What can he do: Descend pretty quickly but his main talent is the pedal wheelie which can go on all day. Any other tricks: Hopping on the back wheel and coasting down hills as well. How long have you been biking for? Since i was about two but serious mountain biking only for about 10 weeks. I finished the Penrith Merida 100 after 4 weeks of biking Xtra info: Instrumental in helping team Fyrish to 3rd place at the Relentless24 in Fort William by keeping check of the times, washing, lubing and preping the bikes ready for another lap. How many tins of Relentless did you need to keep going for the 24 hours? We all lost count after 2 cans!
................................................................................................................................... Swayndos New 29er
What is it? it’s tubeless, suspension less and gear less And the bike? It's an On-One Inbred 29er. www.On-One.co.uk Tell us a little about it? There is no magic carpet ride, but it rides more smoothly over rough ground than you would imagine. The compliance of the steel frame is greater than a 26er Inbred which i used to own, I guess because the stays are longer and the bigger wheels must give it some suspension. What is the spec? Standard, except for tyres/wheels which have been converted to tubeless, the seat has been changed for an On-One big nose and the seat clamp for a Salsa flip lock and the grips have been replaced with Avid lock ons. Those forks look weird? Yep they are Carbon and the head angle of the fork looks like it shouldn't work but it does. Its not like true suspension but they do soak up a lot of trail vibration. They twang back and forth below you and this is compounded by the 185mm rotor. It feels a bit odd but it works. What is the gear ratio? The ratio is 33/18 which sounds like quite a challenge when mated with the bigger wheels but so far i have managed most of what i managed to ride on the 32/18 on the 26er SS. The biggest difference is in acceleration and momentum, it's slightly harder to get it going but once there it can juggernaut it's way through most stuff you'd think it has no right to. How many crashes so far? I had a wee crash on the first ride where i landed flat on my back, i had my weight too far back on a drop- and - rise burn crossing in Evanton wood. Since then i've learned to keep more weight on the front wheel! Any final thoughts? I'm having an absolute blast on it, using it on trails that i find too easy for the full sus bike. Even though it's bigger than my other bikes, it's really chuckable and i can see myself trying harder stuff on it, but I'll never be down Laggan black on it!
Thanks to Swayndo for the details.
