Dig In Around The Docks- Bo'Ness
31 January 2012

Fyrishbikes riders Gordymac(Velo Club Moulin) and Ewan(Nevis Cycles) were in Bo'ness on Sunday for the Dig In cyclo cross race organised by Jon Mcomisky and David Hamill both Scottish cyclo cross stalwarts wanted to put something back into the sport.  In doing so they had set out a fantastic course in parkland surrounding the docks and had even managed to include a cobbled section along the quayside.

With one hundred riders lined up for the start Ewan and Gordymac found themselves boxed in. A clean start was a necessity to get a good placing into the first narrow section.  Ewan fresh from racing the Innerleithen enduro earlier in the day and riding his mountain bike got a good start and was up with the leading pack for the early stage of the race.

Gordymac also stayed upright and quickly settled into a good rythm, eventually bridging a small gap to link up with another two riders.  Working in a small group paid dividends heading into the fiercely cold East wind.

Around the three quarters distance the trio containing Gordymac reeled Ewan in who by now was finding the mountain bike heavy going in the ever softening ground conditions.  With a last lap push Gordymac finished well with Ewan following in ahead of fellow enduro racer Dougal Shearer and in doing so took the trophy for the first enduro rider to finish the cross race.  All in all a good days racing had by everyone.

Full results to follow, Meanwhile here is Dig In part 2.

Dig In Around the Docks- Bo'Ness
24 January 2012

Team rider Gordymac will be in action in Bo'ness this Sunday at the Dig In Around The Docks cyclo cross race.  With a who's who of Scottish cyclo cross organised by David Hamill and Jon Mcomisky the race is sure to be great fun with a fast course in and around the docks, with plenty of cow bells and a drummer on course riders and spectators should be well entertained.

Look out for a race report and picture after the event.

Alek's Puffer 2012
17 January 2012

Strathpuffer 2012- 6th and 7th January.

The wait is almost over. Everything I own bikewise is packed. Horse lorry parked (first corner, perfect). As we head down to the start line the heavens open, but thankfully it was just a passing shower with a few more to follow, but conditions generally mild for January with a strong breeze……..perfect conditions for racing.

After a ‘long’ lemond start, I’m on the bike and into a steady rhythm up the first fireroad climb. Taking it easy as part of my strategy but somehow still passing the vast majority. As usual the first singletrack technical section causes mayhem as riders dismount in front. First lap is littered with overtaking manoeuvres and scoping the best line for my next lap as the mud forms. A steady 41 and then 43 minute laps and I’m already in my stride. I’m racing solo but my friend Chris has joined me (also solo) and pair up taking a lap each on the front. By dusk we have amassed 8 laps and it’s time for some food. Taking an hour to rest and catch up with our respective ‘other-halves’ we head out again with lights ablaze.
10 laps in 11hrs and we’re on course for our pre-race estimate of 20 laps. After socialising in the marquee and catching up with supporters at the start/finish, it’s back to home base, where we meet puffer friends Steve, Iain, Morven and Tracey who offer us a hot cuppa and some soup and more excellent chat. This is what I call racing……………….
Alek and Chris early in the race.
Weather holding up and only need to change merino base layer, gloves and buff. Only a pair of part worn pads replaced also. Amazingly the wind is starting to dry out the exposed standing water puddles and generally the course is riding well except the soft decent from the swivel chair and final decent from the view point. Course littered with speed bumps which are taking its toll on the upper body as I'm riding fully rigid!!(Are you wise? Ed)
Riding strong and steady but 13 laps down 3am and something’s not right!!. My stomach is in knots with shooting pains. I try water/refreshment stop/coke/soup over the next 2 laps but nothing is helping. Lap times drop and I’m struggling badly to focus on the technical sections. Decide to rest for an hour. Still no change, and as it’s my first race in almost 12 months I decide to call it a day. Delighted with fitness, although disappointed with how the race came to an end. Hopefully with a few tweaks to nutrition (dairy intolerance is playing havoc with diet!!) the results will come.
Chris continues to clock up the laps in my absence although the course is having its effect on him but he rides strong to the end clocking up 20 laps and 8th place. Result.
Great race.
Alek

Last Ride Of The Year 2011- Ride Report

Lacking the motivation is not something we should suffer from here at Fyrishbikes but it took a late spur of the moment decision to drag ourselves out for the 2011 Lroty.  In such circumstances there had to be a clear plan to follow.  Through an ever muddying woods, straight up a very soft and busy Jubilee and down the Landrover was the order of the last ride of '11.

Dave thought the monument needed straightening up.

We split at the Jubilee crossroads for Dave to pick up the front track to Evanton and me to blast the last section of the Jubilee.  I was manky by the bottom as the conditions seem to be the muddiest I can ever remember!

The lengths you have to go to for a clean line.

So thats it folks another year of biking down.
What will 2012 bring us?  Surely some dry trails in the summer, More wild trails, More big mountain rides, Less mud.
Are we asking for too much?

Fyrishbikes look forward to seeing you out on the trails in 2012.

Fyrish Boxing Day Bash

Boxing Day Bash Ride Report- 2011

Twelve riders (11 blokes and a Laydee) assembled at the crawl on Monday for the first Fyrish Boxing Day Bash in two years. After a quick discussion a route plan was hatched and we were off, Heading for poop chute and the pipe into the woods. A very windy ascent past animal farm had a few struggling to stay on. Archery was our next target to take us up the back track of Fyrish, The wind was enough to put us off heading for the top and we were in need of a descent by now. A quick drop to the top of the Scottish gave false hope to a few as we had decided on one more climb which would allow us in theory to stay drier by dropping down on tree lined singletrack rather that take the all out soaking of an open track. The Famous Grouse gave a few scary moments for some with Morag deciding by the bottom that road biking was a better and possibly safer idea! Onwards to capers and there were a lot of smiling faces by the bottom, with David leading the praise for Daves trail building skills. Oil drum run was a slip slidy toboggan run with bodies and bikes all over the trail, Odr was still great fun despite there being a few big trees down towards the bottom.

L-R Morag Eagleson, Rob Shaw, Sam Shaw, Kharim Akhtar, David Stuart, Ewan Thorburn, Steve Morrison, Gordy Mackenzie, Saunders Mackay, John Allison, Simon Stewart, Doug McDonald(Basque MTB).

With time getting on we were given a wind assisted run along the front of Fyrish for the last drop back on to the Struie for a final final climb(sorry Steve) back into the woods, But with a tailwind and wee push and a Mule Kick he got there. Another slidy spin through the woods finished off the 2011 BDB.  Just under twenty four muddy miles was enjoyed by all with smiles all round, and we seem to have escaped the worst of the weather.

Thanks to all those that came along for the ride, It wouldn’t be a success without you.

Sunday Ride Report

Sunday Ride Report- Golspie

Our group numbered seven for todays ride, Due to the continuing winter weather we made for the man made trails at Highland Wildcat, Golspie.  Trail conditions earlier in the week were described as favourable so it sounded good.  However overnight snow had changed conditions yet again and so we took to snow covered trails.  Grip was in abundance on the fresh fall of snow, The ascent of lactic ladder was made even more difficult by the icy underlying rocks.  Heading higher was going to be impossible with deep drifts already making progress on lactic ladder slow,  We decided to break off left and head for the rollercoaster where the drifts on the backsides were incredibly deep leading to some exciting moments.  We all regrouped at the traditional spot at the bridge, each one of us arriving with a smile and a tale to tell from the descent.

The following section through the waterfall was ridden with caution, I've never seen so many chicken lines taken before but in some cases even these were a challenge,  There were still a few kamikaze lines taken by a certain rider on a bright green hardtail though.  Dropping lower again and the trails were becoming less snowy allowing us all to pick up some speed at last, Ross had an off into the undergrowth but still arrived at the bottom smiling. The log ride was passed by everyone, I think even a certain Mr Macaskill would have had difficulty on it today.  We all survived an exceptionally snow Golspie, But has anyone seen Dave and Gordymac?  They were last seen heading back up for seconds in a snow storm!

Trail Conditions Update
15 December 2011
Trail Conditions Update- 15.12.11

It's that time of year again where we issue trail condition updates so you know where is good to ride.  Recent snow is still affecting high trails.  Windblown trees are also affecting some trails, Most notably Oil drum run which has three big trees down.  Other trails that have trees down include Cnoc Navie, Milton river and Scotsburn House.  Outside these problems pretty much every trail in our area is muddy, with the mud varying from claggy to super wet.  Flat lying forest tracks still have varying snow cover with icy vehicle tracks and bumpy icy walkers foot prints.
The good thing is there is plenty still on offer to ride so there's no excuses not to get out there and sample it for yourself.

Sunday Ride Report- Alness

Three and a half hardy souls set out on a damp Sunday morning for a trail scouting mission simply to see what was was rideable after the recent storms and snow fall.   Dave W, Gordymac, Kharim and Sky slopped their way through a very wet, muddy and soggy Alness woods.  Climbing on any trail gave the feeling of a punctured tyre and each climb needed maximum effort just to keep forward momentum.  Descending was altogether better but by no means easy, sliding down the descents careful braking and good grippy tyres were required to stay the right way up.  Although conditions were soft the riding was good and we took the decision to head higher on Archery, Snow and not mud now made our going difficult.  The sight of more snow on the back track of Fyrish was enough to keep us on the road to pick up the tarmac descent down to the river except today the tarmac was heavily covered in snow, this made for some interesting moments on the way down. Vehicle tracks had made the track along the river like a skating rink so progress was measured rather than carefree.  At New bridge we split, Kharim getting a lift assist from Sky up the road.  Dave and Gordymac pressed on higher again towards Achandunie and Cnoc Navie where even more snow made for some tough biking.  Our last effort was back into Alness woods to finish off, We couldn't resist a final challenge of staying upright on Off camber.  So it's hard work off road at present and not for the weak but it was good to get out there and we will keep trying.

Cross Racing
29 November 2011
Fyrishbikes rider Gordymac has been in Cross action over the last few weeks at Ballater, Motherwell and Edinburgh.  A cold frosty day at Ballater made for some very fast but puncture prone racing, Keeping out of trouble Gordymac finished in eleventh place.
On to Strathclyde country park, Motherwell, home to M&D's theme park the race was a roller coaster, Conditions were back to being horrendously muddy with twenty three out of fifty five seniors failing to finish through various but mainly rear mech related mechanicals, Gordymac was involved in a race long ding dong with VCM team mate Addy Pope.

Picture: Michael Martin, EKRC

Gradually pulling away and riding in a strong ninth place disaster struck with a last lap puncture forcing Gordymac to run the remainder of the lap and in doing so loosing five places to finish fourteenth.

The next venue on the circuit was Meadowmill sports center, Trannent near Edinburgh on Sunday past, Run in glorious blue skies with a howling wind on a classic style cross course, a lack of mud and nary a technical section meant for super fast racing without the risk of mechanicals for a change.  With a who's who of Scottish cyclocross lining up it was going to be a hard task to finish high up the field and so it proved with Gordymac riding strongly but finishing in twenty first place.

The circus moves on to Auchentoshan, Clydebank this Sunday for the Scottish Championships before going overseas for the final two races on the Isle of Mull the following weekend.  Lookout for a report from Mull soon.
